The Little Match Girl

THE LITTLE MATCH GIRL

Arthur Pita’s magical family show premieres at DanceEast for Christmas

12 – 24 December 2013

DanceEast, The Jerwood DanceHouse, Ipswich

Award-winning director & choreographer Arthur Pita premieres his new dance theatre show The Little Match Girl at DanceEast, Ipswich this Christmas, from Thursday 12 to Tuesday 24 December. A dance theatre adaptation after Hans Christian Anderson’s classic story, The Little Match Girl presents a magical festive treat for all ages 4 and above.

Arthur Pita’s new production tells the touching tale of an impoverished young street girl's hopes and dreams, beautifully told through dance, song and original live music.

A snowy stage sets the scene for an icy cold Christmas Eve, where The Little Match Girl paces the emptying streets trying to sell her matches. Cold, hungry and with just one final match flame to keep her warm, she sees a vision of her beloved grandmother. Leaving her troubled life behind, the little match girl is guided up into the night sky by her grandmother who takes her to the moon. Now, on a clear night, if you look closely, you might see the light of a shooting star, or is it a match burning brightly?

Arthur Pita (previously Associate Artist at The Place) has choreographed work for major international companies from the LA Opera to the Johannesburg’s Dance Umbrella and in the UK from the Royal Shakespeare Company to Phoenix Dance. His multi award-winning adaptation of Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis has attracted critical acclaim since its premiere at the Royal Opera House in September 2011; winning Olivier, Southbank Sky Arts and Critics Circle National Dance Awards and has just enjoyed a sell-out run at the Joyce Theatre in New York this autumn.

Pita returns to DanceEast following his sell-out success with God's Garden in 2011. For The Little Match Girl, he is reunited with The Metamorphosis composer Frank Moon, who will perform his original score live on stage, with designs by Yann Seabra and lighting designs by Ed Yetton. Cast includes: Corey Annand, Valentina Golfieri, Kip Johnson, Frank Moon and Angelo Smimmo.
Open Heart Productions and DanceEast present The Little Match Girl with funding by Arts Council England.

A Christmas Carol

A Christmas Carol
By Charles Dickens  adapted for the stage by John Bush

20th – 23rd November 2013 at the Memorial Hall, Little Baddow at 7.45pm

Charles Dickens created the essence of Christmas in his story, ‘A Christmas Carol’:  Bob Cratchit’s family gathered round goose and pudding, Fezziwig’s Christmas Eve dance, the portly gentlemen collecting for charity.

Underneath the festivities lies Dickens’ anger at the meanness of business men like Scrooge and the suffering of the poor and overworked multitudes at the bottom of the heap.  We could ask whether much has changed since the 1840s.

‘A Christmas Carol’ was on stage two months after it was first published.  Dickens developed dramatic readings of the story and it’s constantly re-invented as a play, musical or film.

Little Baddow Drama’s version is faithful to Dickens’ words as the story moves quickly from Scrooge’s lonely bachelor dwelling to his school days, his failed romance and his encounters with poverty, suffering and the inevitability of his own death.

There’s no better way to start your own preparations for Christmas than this vivid reminder of its true meaning.

LITTLE BADDOW DRAMA’s production of A CHRISTMAS CAROL runs from Wednesday 20th to Saturday 23rd November 2013 in the Memorial Hall at Little Baddow.

Tickets: £8.00 Wed;   £9.00 Thur, Fri and Sat

Box Office: 01245 225509   Tickets from 28th Oct:  6.30pm-9.30pm

There’s a bar and plenty of free parking at the Memorial Hall.

The Incredible Adventures of Clown Slut

The Incredible Adventures of Clown Slut
Mon 14 October  8pm  in the foyer of the Queen's Theatre Hornchurch

“Let me get this straight, I’m getting kicked out of a nightclub for dancing too aggressively?"
This is one girl’s journey through the confusion and mayhem of growing up - dancing her way from the sticky floors of the under 18s disco to the luminous lights of Abra-Kebabra (via Freshers' Week), will Clown Slut ever figure out what it takes to fit in? Muscles will be pulled and trousers will be split as this stand-up theatre piece explores what it means to be a woman today. To wax or not to wax? That is the question...
Local Girl Productions bring you their latest piece of original theatre - created as a response to a remark from a stranger on a bus:
"Do you know what you are?  You're a slut - trapped in the body of a clown".
Written and performed by Joanna Griffin
Directed by Lauren Bracewell

The Incredible Adventures of Clown Slut is about 1 hour and a half (inc interval) long.

Dark Earth

Dark Earth: a historical drama staged at Flag Fen

Acclaimed theatre company, Eastern Angles are returning to Peterborough with Dark Earth, a magical and atmospheric new production performed at Flag Fen. Written, directed and produced by Eastern Angles’ professional creative team, the cast will be made up of performers drawn from the local community including members of Mask Theatre group. The play will be staged in a special covered auditorium with full stage, lighting, sound and tiered seating in the grounds of the historic archaeological site.

Dark Earth by Scottish playwright Forbes Bramble, is set in the Fens during the 1600s and tells of the drainage of the land and the story of two young lovers against the background of the discovery of a disturbing archaeological find. The play shows how the expertise of Dutch engineers was used to transform the landscape in an enthralling play that sets priest against churchgoers, landlords against tenants and engineers against eel-catchers.

Eastern Angles are delighted with the level of local support for this new venture. Produced in association with Vivacity, the production has been enthusiastically supported by local community performers all keen to get involved. This exciting and unique project will become an example of how Peterborough’s community performers and professional theatre-makers can successfully come together to create fantastic new work.

Director Naomi Jones said, “The atmosphere is the rehearsal room is great – very lively and positive. We have attracted  a really good mix of actors, some with lots of experience of the local amateur dramatic scene, others are pupils from local schools like Jack Hunt. It’s a really good dynamic.”

“These people are telling an atmospheric story all about their local area, and some cases their ancestors. It gives the whole project a very special feel.”

Naomi Jones has directed many shows for Eastern Angles, including Return to Akenfield, Lincoln Road, The Long Way Home and most recently Private Resistance. Formerly with Out of Joint, for whom she directed Flight Path, she has also worked extensively for Oxford School of Drama and seen her productions performed at Hampstead Theatre Studio, Clerkenwell Theatre and Southwark Playhouse.

Writer Forbes Bramble worked with the prestigious new writing venue The Royal Court in the 1960s before training to become an architect. Based in Suffolk, his East Anglian connections led him to write this historical new play set in the Fens.

The show will also include puppetry from Polly Beestone (Spielgel Tent, Unicorn Theatre, Eastern Angles) and music by Chris Warner (RSC, The Lyric Theatre Belfast, Grand Opera House in Belfast).

Under the banner Platform Peterborough, Eastern Angles have been creating and performing nationally-acclaimed new theatre work inspired by the people of Peterborough for the last four years. Highlights have included the play Our Nobby, which featured the city’s best-loved tramp, Lincoln Road, based on stories from people living in the city, I Heart Peterborough, which took the Edinburgh Fringe Festival by storm and Parkway Dreams a critically-acclaimed musical documentary based on interviews with Peterborough Development Corporation employees.

Dark Earth will be performed at Flag Fen

Ha Ha Holmes

The inimitable Joe Pasquale, currently starring as King Arthur, will soon be preparing for his week long run in Ha Ha Holmes which premières in one of Joe’s most favourite theatres, the Civic Theatre on Fairfield Road, Chelmsford. What’s more it will be downright hilarious, as the comedian and national treasure follows in the illustrious footsteps of the likes of Robert Downey Jr., Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller and serves up his own unique and very individual comedic portrayal of super sleuth Sherlock Holmes in the touring stage production Ha Ha Homes! The Hound of the Baskervilles.

Joe Pasquale’s Sherlock Holmes will undoubtedly bring chaos to the proceedings when Holmes and Watson investigate their most dangerous case yet – hunting down the Hounds of the Baskervilles. With writer Ben Langley as Doctor Watson and Andrew Fettes playing everyone else, this sure-fire, wonderfully ridiculous show, is well worth an investigation.

Has the beast bitten off more than he can chew when confronted by our crime stopping team?  Will Holmes find his deerstalker and will the deer be happy when he does?    Stick some shag in your pipe and visit 221b Baker Street for the most gripping comic caper of the age!

Swapping spandex for Sherlock’s famous get-up Joe Pasquale recently tested his skills on the ice rink in ITV’s Dancing on Ice having previously captured the nation’s hearts to be crowned celebrity King of the Jungle in 2004’s I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here.   Our high achieving hero and action man is a trained pilot, charity marathon runner, Geoscience degree student and all round good egg.

Sherlock Holmes has never been more popular with the current crop of films and television series honouring the tradition and you’d be absolutely barking mad to miss this pipe-smoking new interpretation of the most popular of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s novels from theatre’s funniest parodists!

Tickets cost from £17.00 - £24.50. (A £1.50 booking fee is applicable per transaction, except for cash and debit card payments made in person and by telephone). To book tickets call the theatre Box Office on 01245 606505 or go online and select your own seats at www.chelmsford.gov.uk/theatres

Spamalot backstage

I'm locked in a poky subterranean lavatory, struggling to get into silver leggings originally made for Matthew Kelly.
In less than an hour, I shall be enjoying my five seconds of fame, walking on to the Playhouse stage in Spamalot. It's not a demanding role. Listen for the cue, stride on, left hand on Sir Robin's right shoulder, double take, apologize and off Stage Right. But I do get a full costume, with plastic breastplate and rather nice soft leather boots, a radio mic for my one word of dialogue, a rehearsal and ceaseless support and encouragement from the friendly but very busy company, including the lovely Bonnie Langford, Joe [Arthur King] Pasquale, Kit Orton [whom I last saw in The Hired Man] and of course the endlessly reassuring Rob Delaney [whom I last saw as Posner in Chichester]. And not forgetting the patient, unflappable stage management team and the wardrobe ladies whose space I invaded for a couple of hours.

The cramped wings are noisy and very busy – a plague cart here, a shrubbery there – but I can see most of the action as well as the quick changes and the props grabbed from the offstage racks. And then it's that "aptly" cue, and I'm on … and off, all too soon, my one moment of West End glory gone in a flash.
Spamalot is running all summer and into the autumn, with stars appearing as God [on video] for charity, and the new Friday schedule, which has a 6pm post-work slot as well as a 9pm.

My brief review here ...

Platero

Platero

After a successful run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Scottish storyteller Mike Maran is bringing his breathtakingly beautiful production of Platero Travels with a Donkey to Chelmsford Cramphorn Theatre on Thursday 2 May.

Maran teamed up with Georgian puppeteer, Nino Namitcheishvili, to create this stage version of Platero y Yo by Spanish Nobel Laureate Juan RamĂ³n JimĂ©nez. The show is directed by Levan Tsuladze, Artistic Director of the Marjanishvili Theatre in Tbilisi, Georgia.

The original book is a series of short prose poems painting an affectionate portrait of Moguer, a small town in the Andalusian countryside where the poet lived with Platero, his little silver donkey, at the turn of the last century. In 1960 the Italian composer Mario Castelnuovo Tedesco wrote a suite of classical guitar music for the great classical guitar player, Segovia, to accompany some of the stories and Craig Ogden, the Australian best selling artist, has especially recorded the music to accompany this production.

Mike Maran specializes in shows combining storytelling with music with previous productions including Mahler Song and Dance Man, A Christmas Carol and A Funny Valentine as well as two long-running shows - Captain Corelli’s Mandolin and Italia ‘n’ Caledonia. He originally conceived the idea for Platero y Yo  in 2009 when he first met Nino Namitcheishvili.

“I had always loved the stories for their simplicity and humanity and had thought about how to stage them. The music perfectly reflects the poetry of the stories but I felt it needed a visual element to go alongside the spoken word and the music. When I met Nino it all fell into place, especially when I discovered that the book had been translated into Georgian and was a favourite of hers.”

Since that first meeting Mike and Nino have collaborated on a large-scale production of Captain Corelli’s Mandolin with five actors and over thirty puppets, a co-production between the Marjanishvili Theatre and the Mercury Theatre Colchester directed by Levan Tsuladze. That team is now reunited for this production with the addition of bestselling classical guitarist Craig Ogden who travelled to Georgia to record the soundtrack during the rehearsals in Tbilisi.

Tickets are £13.00 and concessions £11.50 (a £1.50 booking fee is applicable per transaction, except for cash and debit card payments made in person). Tickets can be booked online by visiting www.chelmsford.gov.uk/theatres or via the Box Office on 01245 606505.

Ballet Central

Thursday 18 April 7.45pm
Ballet Central
Civic and Cramphorn Theatres

The renowned graduate performing company from the Central School of Ballet, Ballet Central, will reach Chelmsford’s Civic Theatre on Thursday 18 April on their forthcoming tour.
Performing in their home county at Chelmsford’s Civic Theatre is particularly exciting for four dance students from Essex: Thomas Broderick from Leigh-on-Sea aged 19, Joshua Earl from Epping also aged 19, Abigail Stopher who is 18 years old from Stamford-le-Hope and Bethany Pike from Colchester aged 20 who used to belong to local Ballet school The Chelmsford Ballet Company.  All four students are in their final year of training to be professional dancers at Central School of Ballet (CSB) in London which is this year celebrating its 30 year anniversary.   Ballet Central is the touring company of CSB, the prestigious centre for professional dance training and education.  Students on the final year of their three year BA (Hons) degree course join Ballet Central to gain invaluable touring experience before graduation.  Ballet Central’s dancers not only perform but also help with all aspects of staging, from technical lighting to wardrobe.
The annual Ballet Central tour offers a chance to see some of the most highly skilled new dance talent perform newly commissioned works and much-loved revivals by the dance industry’s top choreographers.
The highlights of this year’s Ballet Central repertoire include a dynamic range of new pieces; an elegant neo-classical piece by Kenneth Tindall entitled Signature 31/30 to a new score by Ballet Central’s Musical Director Philip Feeney, a thrilling new contemporary work Mapping #3 by Darshan Singh Bhuller, a vibrant jazz piece Love on Top by Stacey Haynes and an enthralling narrative dance called anon. by Christopher Marney.
William Glassman, Artistic Director of Ballet Central, explains why the Ballet Central tour is so well received across the UK: “Each year we bring dance pieces by some of the UK’s most highly acclaimed choreographers to local theatres. It’s a chance to see the most electrifying dance of today performed regionally.  Classical ballet fans will relish the Florestan Pas De Trois from The Sleeping Beauty and a revival of Christopher Gable’s Fireside pas de Deux from his 1993 production of Cinderella and if it’s contemporary dance that excites, a new work Insinuare by Sara Matthews and Leanne King will certainly deliver.”
Audiences for the much-anticipated Ballet Central tour are increasing each year attracting dance lovers and those new to live dance performance.  The varied repertoire features a programme of ballet, contemporary, jazz and narrative dance suitable for families and all age groups.  Ticket prices are deliberately low to make the tour widely accessible. Another highlight of Ballet Central is the music, much of which has been created by CSB’s Composer-in-Residence Philip Feeney who also performs live on the tour.
Sara Matthews, CSB’s Director, comments: “We are the only vocational ballet school to offer an Honours Degree and pre-professional touring experience on such a scale.  Ballet Central continues to be a springboard for hundreds of dancers into the top international dance companies. Dancers live to perform so touring is a much anticipated part of our three year curriculum.  And we hope that the Ballet Central tour will provide inspiration to young dancers who may be thinking about professional dance as a career.”
Graduates from CSB go on to join the world’s premier dance companies. Recent CSB students are currently employed with Birmingham Royal Ballet, Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures Company, English National Ballet, Scottish Ballet, National Ballet of Estonia, Ballet Black, Northern Ballet, K Ballet, Rambert Dance Company, Phoenix Dance Theatre, Slovakia Ballet, Singapore Dance Theatre, and many more.

Tickets are £14.50, concessions £11.50 and a family ticket £47.00. To book tickets visit www.chelmsford.gov.uk/theatres or call the Box Office on 01245 606505.

The Long Life and Great Good Fortune of John Clare

Friday 12 April 8.00pm
The Long Life and Great Good Fortune of John Clare
Cramphorn Theatre

I saw this Eastern Angles show in Sudbury - certainly worth a look when it comes to Essex.
It explores the facts and myths about the life and health of England’s famous 19th century ‘peasant poet. The Long Life & Great Good Fortune of John Clare comes to the Chelmsford Cramphorn Theatre on Friday 12 April.
The play focuses on a man who believes he is John Clare. His psychiatrist, Melody, is busy swotting up on the poet trying to fathom the reasons behind her patient's delusion. Meanwhile, Melody's partner, writer and literature graduate Rafe, is fixated on his own version of the Clare legend. In their search for the real story all three characters reveal some startling truths about themselves
We think we know all about John Clare - 'innocent poet’ sent to the asylum by the ‘evil Dr Skrimshire'.  On one hand he was our most loved chronicler of nature, an eco-warrior for his time. But he is also seen as a man robbed of his birthright and unfairly locked up for his visions.
John Clare is remembered for his life more than his poetry – lime-burner, labourer, womaniser, walker, visionary, lunatic. But, in Tony Ramsay’s play, a new John Clare emerges.

Eastern Angles are known for their extensive Spring Tours designed to bring professional theatre productions to audiences in rural locations across the Eastern region. As part of the company’s commitment to bringing high-quality theatre work to audiences on their own doorstep, The Long Life & Great Good Fortune of John Clare will be performed 52 times visiting a total of 42 venues across East Anglia during March, April and May 2013.
Book tickets whilst they are still available. Tickets are priced £15.00 and can be booked online at www.chelmsford.gov.uk/theatres or via the Box Office on 01245 606505.
Tickets cost £13.00, concessions £11.50 and can be booked online at www.chelmsford.gov.uk/theatres or via the Box Office on 01245 606505.

The Irish House Party

The Irish House Party
Civic Theatre

The Irish House Party is a show packed full of traditional Irish music and dancing including a very special local guest and featuring the All Ireland Champion musicians at Chelmsford Civic Theatre on Sunday 31 March.

Cool and modern, The Irish House Party reflects traditional Irish music the way it is today.
Irish music and dance shows often conjure up images of flat caps, waist coats and comely maidens at the cross-roads. The Irish House Party is a welcome antidote to the often cheesy portrayals of Irish music and culture. It is a stage show like no other, hosted by All-Ireland Champion musicians, dancers and entertaining presenters who not only perform soul stirring music but also combine a unique blend of light hearted audience interaction and fascinating stories about the history of the music and the instruments. This creates a unique Irish experience resulting in an exciting new theatre going experience.

From their humble beginnings as one of the countless musicians performing on the streets and in the venues of Dublin the raw talent and uniqueness of The Irish House Party soon caught the attention of the city. As word spread, the show evolved and it wasn’t long before The Irish House Party were themselves a key attraction. The show has been receiving outstanding reviews and is a huge hit with visitors from around the world to locals and fellow musicians alike. The cross section of famous guests from the world of politics, literature sport and showbiz are too numerous to mention.

The Irish House Party could be described as a contradiction in terms because it is traditional yet contemporary at the same time. This has led to some surprising collaborations with some of the biggest names in pop music including a performance with UK boy band The Wanted on their no.1 hit single ‘Glad You Came’. The Irish House Party band were also asked by BBC DJ Chris Moyle’s to perform at the rap party for the musical Jesus Christ Superstar when it came to Dublin recently. After seeing the guys perform in Dublin the executive writer of CSI Miami flew them over to LA to play for the cast and crew of CSI in Hollywood. As well as pop collaborations, The Irish House Party band also perform pure traditional Irish music including songs in the native Irish language.

Joining the talented group of dancers and musicians will be local traditional Irish dancer, Laura Baylis who dances with the National and Folk Dance Centre in Writtle. 16 year old Laura who is studying her A-levels at Hylands School will be joining The Irish House Party troop on one of their dances in a wonderful collaboration between the touring professional company and local dance school. The National and Folk Dance Centre aim to bring the joy of European folk dance to all age groups developing a sense of community and awareness of other cultures. Dancers have the opportunity to study traditional dances, costumes, music and customs. Annette Clark who runs the dance school is thrilled to be teaming up with the production and giving Laura, who is currently working at Advanced 2 Level of National dance, the opportunity to work with a professional company.

The concept of the show is to create a house party environment where the audience feels they are at an actual party in someone's living room which is not only family friendly but truly engages audiences of all ages!
